Navigating the 2018 Milken Institute’s Global Conference
By Joel Garrison
The Military Leadership Circle website and social media network will be highly active for the next two weeks during events associated with the Milken Institute’s Global Conference (GC) 2018 slated for April 29 thru May 2. Our members are preparing to share our best GC moments with you. The theme of this year’s GC is ‘Navigating a World in Transition.’ The speakers and programs are as amazing as ever. Sports stars slated to speak include New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady, former New York Yankee shortstop and third basemen Alex Rodriguez, and the owner and chair of the Sacramento Kings, Vivek Ranadivé. Celebrity speakers include actresses Goldie Hawn and Ashley Judd, actors Tyler Perry and George Takei, and film director/producer James Cameron. My favorite speaker is world-renowned primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall. High-profile speakers in the national security community include former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, General (retired) David Petraeus, and Admiral (retired) James G. Stavridis. The Military Leadership Breakfast features Admiral Stavridis speaking alongside Representative Mac Thornberry, Chairman, Armed Services Committee; Deborah Lafer Scher, Executive Advisor to the Secretary, Center for Strategic Partnerships, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; and our own Military Leadership Circle, Founder, Lieutenant Commander Matt Driskill, U.S. Navy.
If the entire program consisted of the people and events listed in the first paragraph, it would be the most amazing event I could ever attend, BUT there is so much more… From the international community come speakers from across the globe such as Jim Yong Kim, the President of the World Bank Group, and His Excellency Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda. There is also a strong showing of former U.S. Government officials to include Al Gore, the 45th Vice President of the United States. Secretary, U.S. Department of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin, and Secretary, U.S. Department of Commerce, Wilbur L. Ross, Jr., who top a list of over a dozen speakers representing U.S. Government departments and agencies. Approximately fifteen current or former Members of the U.S. Congress are slated to speak, headlined by the Democratic Leader, U.S. Senate Chuck Schumer and the Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan. Other political figures include five current or former state Governors including former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. Additional speakers include former and current executives of name brand corporations such as Citigroup, Microsoft Corp, Facebook, eBay, HBO, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Toyota Motor North America, PepsiCo, Nestlé USA Foods Division, Whole Foods, The Kraft Group, Tyson Foods, Johnson and Johnson, CVS Health, and K-Swiss Brand, and Levi Strauss & Co. Finally, the GC also brings together the top leaders in healthcare, finance, technology, media, research, education, and philanthropy.
