Captain Alex Willard is an Army Strategist serving in the Commander's Initiatives Group (CIG) at U.S. Army South, located in San Antonio, TX. His predominant job responsibilities include developing senior military engagement strategies for the Commanding General, cross-functional planning, and external messaging to the Department of the Army and Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).
His past assignments include Strategic Planner in the G5 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Battalion Operations Officer and Company Commander in the 1st BCT, 101st Division, Company Commander in 2-29 Infantry Battalion, and platoon leader and executive officer in the 172nd Infantry Brigade. During these assignments, he completed combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and a humanitarian assistance and disaster response deployment in support of USAID’s mission to curb the spread of Ebola in Liberia.
CPT Willard’s military education includes the Infantry Officer’s Basic Course, Maneuver Captains’ Career Course (Commandant’s List), Ranger school, Airborne school, Pathfinder school, the Defense Strategy Course, and the Basic Strategic Arts Program.
Alex graduated from Furman University with a BA in History, is completing an MBA with a specialization in human resources from the University of Incarnate Word, and was recently accepted to begin the Master’s in Public Policy program at Carnegie Mellon the fall of 2017. He is currently serving as the Vice President of the San Antonio chapter of the Army Strategists Association.
