John Hawley is a US Navy Lieutenant currently serving as the Fast Learning Advisor and Co-Creator of the illuminate Thinkshop Series at United States Fleet Forces Command. Previously the Cybersecurity Officer at Naval Information Forces located in Suffolk, Virginia, he worked on a top-tier project to educate worldwide Naval Leadership about cybersecurity. As a Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer and Propulsion Plant Watch Officer, he served as the Reactor Controls Division Officer onboard USS GEORGE HW BUSH. He has completed deployments to the Middle East in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE as well as served as the Commanding Officer's go-to Officer of the Deck for disaster relief efforts off the coast of Japan for Fukushima during OPERATION TOMODACHI. LT Hawley graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VA Tech) in 2009; Sigma Lambda Chi International Construction Honor Society (top 10%). While there, he also attained Real Estate and Leadership minors as well as his Naval commission from the Virginia Tech ROTC program.

John has facilitated dozens of human centered design and design thinking events, including: Under Secretary of the Navy Innovation event; HACKtheSKY, Naval Surface Forces Pacific "Hackathon" event for cybersecurity personnel, COMSEVENTHFLT Leadership Ethics & Diversity Symposium, Naval Cyber Defense Operations Command, Naval Information Forces, and several others. His education in design thinking originated during a fast-paced, hands-on design thinking workshop at Stanford where he tackled real-world projects to learn the design school’s human-centered, prototype-driven approach to innovation.

His volunteer work is as diverse as he is; Military Leadership Circle, Vettechtrek, Assistant Scout Master, and Heart of Compassion Partnerships among others.
LT Hawley is focused heavily on how to reduce workload while maintaining a level of readiness that is adequate to fight the enemy. He believes this is done through outside the box thinking and is convinced that nobody is further ‘outside of the box’ than he is! With his diverse background and thirst for process improvement, leadership, and inventive problem solving, he co-created the illuminate “thinkshop” series with AT1 Richard Walsh. This course and the book that accompanies it, teaches young Sailors and Marines how to bring their ideas to fruition by leveraging the latest developments in marketing, engineering, and design.

He loves snowboarding, playing with his German Shepherd, home improvement, camping and involvement in his local Cub Scout Pack as an Assistant Scout Master, connecting with people, and seeing as many places on earth that he can. Constantly thinking of new ideas and solutions to everyday problems, he is a Modern-day MacGyver. He has been married nearly 5 years to Carissa Hawley, a recently separated Navy Lieutenant Surface Warfare Officer. They have a 4 year old German Shepherd and a 7-month old daughter. They reside in Virginia Beach, VA.
